Tools

Any workman knows the importance of the right tools for the job.

And at Direct Building Products, we have a wide range of products to ensure you’re well-equipped for the task ahead.

Exterior render should increase the longevity of your building, prevent damp, increase fire resistance, protect against the extremes of the Great British weather and guard against other polluting risks to the home, whilst improving the aesthetics to give it that good-as-new look. An external render job that is inefficiently laid down or carelessly whacked on with no regard for finish or quality will leave any home looking worse for wear and protect against nothing.

And just as a shoddy toolkit will leave your render work looking well below standard, the right gear will help your skillset shine through, impressing your clients and cementing your reputation as the best in the biz.

At Direct Building Products, we provide the right tools at the right price to help you achieve that flawless render finish.

Not sure what you’re looking for? Take a look at some of our most frequently asked questions for this category below.

Below you’ll find everything you need to create a smooth and flawless render. We have a wide selection of render essentials available, including trowels, floats and more.

When using insulation boards as a base for your render, you should be using a metal rasp to shave them down – our range includes the Tungsten Tigerclaw EWI Rasp, a cost-effective choice designed to retain its sharpness, meaning this is a piece of kit that will last a long time.

A smooth and seamless application is essential to your rendering, and we sell a number of tools designed to ensure this at every stage of the process. These include our basecoat scarifier which secures the surface for your render, and the rendering rule – these can be used to minimise laitance (see below) and perfect your surface.

A finishing spatula will also help to achieve this, and in addition to rendering, this tool can also be used for plaster, spray paints and joint fillers, making it a versatile instrument for any tradesperson to have in their arsenal.

The float is one of the final tools you’ll use to level off your render. We offer a number of different floats for various purposes – see below to find out which is best for you.

The trowel is another necessary finishing tool. Our Marshalltown Gold Stainless Steel finishing trowel comes with a DuraSoft handle and will prevent unsightly and uneven marks to get that finish as flat and level as possible. This tool is particularly suited to beginners, but even experienced pros can benefit from its easy-to-use design. Meanwhile, with its sturdy build and durability, the Haring Trowel is perfect for creating a textured pebbledash finish.

Our range also includes the Marshall Aluminium Hawk – these are an essential tool in any kit to maximise ease and efficiency throughout the process.

The type of float you should choose depends on a few factors, including the products you’re using and the finish you’re hoping to achieve. We supply a number of different floats, including:

  • Nail Float – these are designed for keying and scraping polymer renders and will provide a textured finish to your wall.
  • Plastic finishing float – these are strong and durable, yet lightweight for ease of application.
  • Sponge floats – these are used for smoothing and shaping to prime your render for final trowelling. Available in a fine or a coarse finish depending on your preference.

Laitance is the term for layers of cements and aggregate which rise to the surface, and if you’re not careful, it can destroy your hard work, disrupting the drying process of your render and ruining the texture and finish of your coating.

You can prevent laitance rising to the surface by using a serrated edge feather rule on a fresh coat, which will remove your air pockets and locate low spots. Our nail float is also an excellent tool to dispense of laitance on the surface whilst creating a decorative finish.
